What makes Indianapolis a world class city to do business in and attract workers and tourists? Working infrastructure, social justice, good public education, a trained workforce? Yes, these are important. But there’s a much less complicated, low-tech element to add to Indianapolis shining: Clean, trash-free streets, intersections and parking lots.

The amount of litter throughout Indianapolis is progressively getting worse. Frankly, I am ashamed of how our city looks. Just drive anywhere and the road clutter abounds.

We need a “Make Indianapolis Beautiful” campaign. It could include special “Pick It Up Day” group/neighborhood efforts, efforts to encourage retailers and mall owners to regularly bus their sidewalks and parking lots, actively enforcing littering fines, and classroom awareness training for our younger citizens. These are just a few ideas.

It doesn’t have to cost a lot, but making Indianapolis clean again would definitely make us look like the world class city we want to be.

  1. It’s ironic. Now (recently) we have Innovation Districts and newly modernized IEDC incentives for mega-projects, but our public realm is littered with consumer waste. What do the visiting corporate scouts think when they see it?
