Michigan-based Ficosa North America Corp. notified the Indiana Department of Workforce Development last week that the company will shut down the facility in Berne on May 31 and move existing operations to other Ficosa locations in North America.
The closure will affect about 120 hourly workers and 17 salaried employees. But if Ficosa can sell the plant, some employees could be retained by the new ownership or at least have the opportunity to apply for job openings, Ficosa said in its notice to the state.
The plant, about 35 miles south of Fort Wayne, makes rear-view mirror systems, shift systems, fluid systems, parking brake systems, and air intake systems for U.S. car companies.
In 2011, Ficosa laid off 175 employees for at least six months as the parent company consolidated operations.
Founded in 1995, Ficosa North America is a subsidiary of Spain-based Ficosa.
