One of the most glaring deficiencies in our State is lack of research medical schools. It is outrages that we have just one, and it is not considered a top tier research oriented school. No wonder Lilly has spent it money in other parts of he US where there is a more serious focus on research. Our State could easily have two more research medical schools, one at Purdue and one at Notre Dame. Our State desperately needs more research diversity. Trying to do this under one umbrella organization, i.e. Indiana CTSI, is just a joke.
Unfortunately, Phillip T. is misinformed. IU School of Medicine is a highly ranked med school for research. Eli Lilly & Co. has long had a close relationship with it. That Lilly spends its research money all over the world is not to slight the IUSM. Second, the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine, a private school, is in Indiana. It received much assistance from the IUSM to get started. Third, Purdue had a medical school briefly but couldn’t keep it. Over one hundred years ago, amid intense and bitter lobbying, Indiana University secured the affiliation of the two medical schools in Indianapolis which formed the IUSM. Fourth, the University of Notre Dame, a private school, has chosen not to offer medical training. Ask them why. Instead, the IUSM trains a portion of its first and second year students there and at other campuses around the state, including West Lafayette. Indeed, the IUSM has nine locations around the state. Finally, I doubt that the legislature would countenance a second state-supported medical school. They seem to be loath to support the one adequately.
Thank you Lilly. Perhaps now Indiana (and its congressional delegation) will focus on HW 65 repairs and continued expansion to three lanes. That stretch is a hot mess.

One only has to look to our immediate surrounding states to illustrate how fall behind Indiana is regarding medical education:
Illinois – 7 + one DO School
Ohio 6 + one DO School
Michigan 5 + one DO School
Kentucky 2 + one DO School
It is more than the number of medical schools (of all types), it is the number of Residency education slots as well.
The total amount of research dollars is smaller than at least 3 of our immediate surrounding States.
With our extremely poor, State-wide, public health history because of minimal funding by the State, looming physician shortage (which has been accelerated by the pandemic), Indiana is not prepared.
Lilly HAS NOT invested heavily in developing research facilities in Indiana. It goes to the east and west coasts for that.
It is fantastic that Lilly is investing in Indiana for manufacturing. Where are the big Pharma companies when it comes to research investment in Indiana? That is not happening!!!
One can take all 4 years of medical school at Purdue, but the medical degree is from IU. PURDUE can, if its wants at this time, to break away from the grips of IU. It only needs another hospital affiliation and the deal is done. Without Purdue, Indiana CTSI would fold. IU tried to develop CTSI on its own initially, but was turned down by NIH. It had to add Purdue and Notre Dame to get its CTSI established.
IU HAS never fully embrace Pharma over the years. Specifically, implementing Phase I-III clinical trials to get new drugs on the market. Just contact any Pharma about implementing a clinical trial at IU. Let those companies tell you directly the difficulties that they encounter. Do not take my word for it. From an economic perspective, our State is missing out on millions and millions of dollars to conduct these trials in our State. Only citizens of Indiana, think that IUMC is a big deal!!!!!!!
Which hospital affiliation would you want Purdue to have? Furthermore, where would the expanded residency slots go? Only Indianapolis has the ability to provide a vast array of residencies and fellowships. No other area in Indiana would be able to do that (unlike multiple cities in Ohio, 2 in KY, and then the big deal that is Chicago…throw in the Detroit programs and the tertiary referral center in Ann Arbor). This is the life Indiana chose. Zero chance another major medical school could get what it needed to rival anything in neighboring states.
A new medical school does not initially need to have a residency or fellowship program initially. In the real world, many medical students go to “out of state” programs via the matching program, regardless of what state your medical school is located. In fact, for one’s residency (e.g. internal medicine), one typically visits at least a half dozen programs and ranks them. Those programs looks at your performance in medical school and ranks you with the other applicants who apply. On “match day,” you find out where you go. Based on your performance in residency as well as your interest, you apply for a fellowship (e.g. cardiology). It is not unusual at all to for physicians in their training go to three different programs (i.e. medical school, residency, fellowship). In many ways this approach give you better training experience since you are exposed to many points of view and not a single “party line.” Of course, my concern over the years is that many, many Indiana physicians have on received IU indoctrination. Also, what happens to the graduates from Marian. With their DO, they also go through the same process. Did it need a residency or fellowship program to open its doors?
Purdue could use other hospital systems which are not necessarily in the Lafayette area for the third and fourth years of school. Purdue could persuade the State if it just had the moral fortitude to battle the State legislation. I doubt that will happen with current Purdue president. In the meantime, the citizens are getting the short end of the stick when it comes to health care.
