Hamilton County Deputy Prosecutor Jessica Paxson on Tuesday announced she will run for county prosecutor in the November general election.
Paxson will run as a Democrat and challenge Greg Garrison, a well-funded former radio talk show host who defeated three-term incumbent D. Lee Buckingham in the Republican primary on May 3.
Paxson has served as deputy prosecutor for seven years. She also worked for four years in the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office and spent two years in private law practice.
“Right now, our four cities (Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Westfield) are all ranked in the top seven safest cities in the state,” Paxson said in written remarks. “To keep it that way, Hamilton County needs an experienced prosecutor who has deep relationships in our community and is familiar with the technological advancements in forensic evidence and courtroom presentation.”
Paxson is a member of the Domestic Violence Task Force and co-chair of Hamilton County’s Sexual Assault Response Team.
The primary in May was the first election in which Buckingham faced a competitor.
Buckingham served as a deputy prosecutor for 15 years before he ran in 2011 to be Hamilton County’s top law enforcement officer.
Garrison was supported in the election by former Vice President Mike Pence, who hosted a fundraiser for Garrison in April with the priciest tickets going for $5,000 each.
Garrison defeated Buckingham by receiving 59% of the vote.

The last thing any county needs is a hot headed radio host as prosecutor.
Greg Garrison seems like the type of person to shoot you in a road rage incident.
Anything would be better than some of the lefty prosecutors like the feckless one in Marion County who lets everyone off or puts them on ankle monitors.
Some new thinking in the Prosecutor’s office would be a good thing. Paxson has my vote. A political hothead will not seek justice in resolving cases. He will calibrate his decisions for their political impact.
How about a prosecutor who prosecutes? Garrison successfully prosecuted Mike Tyson against the strongest criminal defense lawyer in the entire state of Indiana. There are too many prosecutors in the country today that are letting off criminals too easily.

He is anything but the nonsensical assumptions made by Michael R., Robert H., etc. But those comments are to be expected from the left wing. ‘Wait until their home gets burglarized or they get assaulted for $5 and see how they feel about weak-kneed prosecutors of the D stripe. Sadly, some people can’t learn without serious incidents close to home….if then…
I hope Greg swamps her in the election by a landslide.
How about a prosecutor who actually leads criminal prosecutions (not ‘assists’ as Garrison’s own web states) and isn’t living off the high profile Tyson case in 1992. What has Greg been doing the last 7 years while Jessica has been prosecuting serious crimes including leading efforts to fight sexual assault and domestic violence? Besides Garrison doing personal injury lawsuits?
Democrat Prosecutors across country in heavy Democrat jurisdictions getting recalled for letting criminals off like that is their job. She may be good but the current brand and track record of her party in that position is easy to run against these days.
Garrison hasn’t been an assistant prosecutor for decades. Laws, forensics, and technology have changed considerably since then. The prosecutor’s job is so much more than a retirement hobby.
It seems to me that a person like Greg Garrison would not run for such a critical position on a whim or out of retirement boredom. Based on my conversations with him and his wife I believe he is absolutely serious about improving the performance of the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s office. Given his experience he sees issues with the performance of that office that most of us do not due to our lack of technical knowledge of the way the enforcement of the Law works.
As a citizen about to experience my 83 birthday I find it offensive to suggest in any way that someone of Greg’s age might not be up to the task. He is mentally sharp and physically active in contrast to certain other public figures.
He has my support and my vote.

I take exception to the statement Garrison defeated the strongest defense lawyer in the state. As I remember it; Don King brought in a no nothing lawyer from New York to defend Tyson, while the best lawyer in the state was kept muzzled. The result: Tyson was railroaded to prison for like of fair representation.
