An Indianapolis couple has been indicted on federal mail fraud charges after allegedly engaging in a five-year scheme to defraud insurance companies, U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett’s office announced Wednesday afternoon.

George Bowman, 43, and Traci L. Bowman, 42, are accused of falsifying purchase records and fraudulently filing insurance claims for expensive construction equipment they never purchased between January 2008 and January 2013.

Over that period, the pair allegedly filed $980,000 in fraudulent theft claims for the equipment, receiving payouts of $719,692.

George Bowman faces eight counts of mail fraud and Traci Bowman faces four counts of mail fraud. Both defendants could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

George Bowman used numerous aliases in making the claims, authorities say, including Evan Medley, Richard Medley, Anthony Medley, James Russell, Gary Williams and Kevin Williams.

False reports were filed with the Cleveland Police Department, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the Lawrence Police Department, prosecutors say.

Investigators say the pair used a number of company registrations to disguise the fraud, including Clearview Homes, Russbow Builders, Russell Enterprises, TAB Construction, MCL Construction, and KJW Displays.

The charging document also says the pair recruited or induced others to assist their criminal efforts.
