The National Urban League has selected 40 organizations in Marion County to receive more than $21 million in grants through the new Indianapolis African American Quality of Life Initiative, it announced this week.

The initiative—a partnership with the Indianapolis Urban League, the National Urban League and the African American Coalition of Indianapolis—was founded in August 2020 through a $100 million Lilly Endowment Inc. grant.

The first round of funding includes more than 50 grants, with some groups receiving more than one grant for separate projects.

Six groups were awarded $1 million each for projects that promote racial equity in housing: Eastern Star Church Jewel Human Services Corp., Pathway Resource Center Inc., Flanner House of Indianapolis, Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership, IFF, and the Kheprw Institute.

The initiative also included funding for education, workforce development, and health and wellness programs.

Flanner House, the Kheprw Institute and Indy Black Expo each received funding for three projects. Martin University, Edma Martin Christian Center Inc., the Indy Black Chamber of Commerce and United Northeast Community Development Corp. each received grants for two initiatives.

The full list of recipients can be found here.
