He is said to have sold or brokered the sale of hundreds of Ferraris over the years from his home in Carmel, along with occasional masterpieces such as a Bugatti Type 57.

John Delamater, now in his 80s, also was one of eight co-founders of the Ferrari Club of America, 50 years ago, in Indiana.

So it’s fitting that the storied broker and Ferrari enthusiast was to be the special guest at the Ferrari Club’s 50th anniversary celebration on June 23 at Crane Bay downtown.

About 30 Ferraris from around the country were to be on hand. The Ferrari Club of America Central Indiana Chapter planned to raise money at the event for the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana.

Around these parts, Corvettes are more prevalent than Ferraris. So it may be surprising to some that Indiana is the founding location of the club, said William Smith, who heads the local chapter and over the years has owned five Ferraris, including a 458 Italia.

To many, Delamater was expected to be the star attraction at the show. After he bought his first Ferrari in the late 1950s, Delamater helped many a car enthusiast over the next 60 years own their dream car, according to a lengthy profile Automobile magazine wrote on Delamater for its February 2009 edition.
