Indianapolis residents are getting their first chance to weigh in on proposed protections for the buildings near the city's famed Monument Circle.

Thursday's meeting at the Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 Central Ave., from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. will detail the proposed Monument Circle Historic District and give the public a chance to comment on the idea.

Department of Metropolitan Development spokesman John Bartholomew said Monument Circle's towering Soldiers and Sailors Monument has long been protected by state law.

But the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission wants to provide special protections for the exteriors of about 90 buildings in the blocks surrounding that monument.

Bartholomew said the historic district would add an extra layer of review for proposed changes to the facades of those buildings and their architectural styles that date from the Civil War to the present day.
