Most of what is presented in this story is uninspiring and hardly bold. In fact, one recommendation of “what Indiana should do” appears to be taking a step backward. Specifically, the removal of the requirement for a high school diploma for child care workers. If the idea if to improve education so that young Hoosiers are better prepared to join the workforce, why in the world would you drop a requirement for education?
And while much of what Chris LeMothe says is spot on except for neglecting to put a serious emphasis on Pre-K education, something which is sorely lacking in Indiana (our state ranks 51st among all states and the District of Columbia in early education programs). Why this aspect of our state’s education efforts was ignored by the governor’s workforce commission is beyond comprehension.
If we are serious about better preparing our children to compete for higher paying jobs in the future, we need to repeal the law that allows students to drop out of school at age 16, and we need to make two year’s of state-run junior college free to all high school graduates regardless of their GPA. Anything less is all talk and no action.
The solution to many of Indiana problems is money… we simply don’t want to spend it. We get what we pay for.
Brent, you make some excellent points and I agree. I had to read the recommendation about removing the high school graduation requirement for childcare workers twice, as I too couldn’t believe it. A high school education is the minimum we should expect out of our childcare workers. It seems like the biggest obstacle to hiring people for these jobs is that the pay is terrible–how did this story not mention it? I’m hoping they address this in the report…surely they do, right?
And about early childhood education…the best they could come up with is partnering with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library? The solution is right in front of us: dip into that massive surplus to pay for universal Pre-K!
Hmmm, this sounds interesting. Who’s leading the talent agency?
The recommendations are very much focused on existing Hoosiers and are generalities I believe that have all been stated in the past. The details that are coming hopefully in the near future will really be what is interesting.
However, we also need to accept that there is a lot of pull for Hoosiers with specialized skills to go to other states and that Indiana does not especially have the same pull to bring outsiders here. This does not seem to be addressed. We need consider that this is possibly due to the political and social climate of the state.
You’re asking legislators to acknowledge that their actions and policies might have contributed to the problem.
Or, put another way, “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”
How much of our educational problems might have to do with our school voucher program which essentially sends kids to learn religion while devastating public school budgets? And how much might have to do with the decline in post-secondary education funding?
I agree wholeheartedly with the thoughtful replies of the first seven commenters and will add this: When you spend 15 years defunding and demonizing public education (including its teachers), this is what you get. It shouldn’t be a surprise. You’ve heard of the old adage, Garbage In, Garbage Out. The fact that the General Assembly has spent more time on faux outrage issues from the religious right than seriously tackling the real issues of our educational system explains a lot, including why educated young people are fleeing our state.
One of the biggest barriers to a better educational experience is the lack of high speed fiber outside of any major Indiana city. The suburban/rural areas of Indiana would be much better served with an investment in high speed internet access than farm subsidies or tax cuts. Getting high speed fiber network installed would also make many cities more attractive to the increasing number of work from home and hybrid work professionals. Satellite internet is not a solution- anyone who has used it can speak to the performance issues. Installing and maintaining this network would also create many non-technical jobs for those that do not pursue higher education.
I feel like Brent is equating education with more college classes. While Indiana does need more STEM workers, there should also be respect for skills that provide services. When your furnace quits, you want someone to fix the furnace, not share their college credits. The idea that you can force a student to stay in school because of a “law” is entertaining. Nothing can be more disruptive to education than a student who is intent on being expelled so they can leave school. We need more educators to weigh in on the reality of teaching today.
