Allen Superior Judge John Surbeck sentenced David Bisard to a total of 16 years in prison, but suspended the last three years.
Bisard resigned Monday from the police department. He was convicted last month on nine counts, the most serious of which was driving with a blood-alcohol content above 0.15 percent while in a fatal accident.
Bisard expressed remorse at the sentencing but continued to say he wasn't drinking prior to the Aug. 6, 2010 incident.
The trial was moved to Fort Wayne because of publicity surrounding the case.
