Executives of the axle supplier informed the state of the plant’s closing on Friday. The company was founded locally in 1960 and is a subsidiary of London-based Tompkins PLC.
The demise of Dexter is the latest setback for the city in northern Indiana already reeling from job cuts in the recreation vehicle industry. Elkhart County had an 18.3 percent jobless rate in January, the worst in the state.
