James Callaghan

Dr. James Callaghan, CEO of Franciscan Health’s central Indiana hospitals since 2015, has been promoted to an executive position at health system’s corporate parent.

Franciscan Health announced Thursday that Callaghan has been named senior vice president and chief operating officer for Mishawaka-based Franciscan Alliance, which operates 12 hospitals in Indiana and Illinois, effective Jan. 1.

Franciscan Health is the undisputed king of Indianapolis’ south-side health care providers, with more than 400 staffed beds at its massive hospital campus on South Emerson Avenue.

Callaghan, an internal medicine physician, has overseen operations at hospitals in Indianapolis, Mooresville and Carmel, with a medical and support staff of more than 4,000 people.

During his seven years at the helm, Callaghan led several initiatives, including the establishment of Franciscan Health Orthopedic Hospital Carmel, Franciscan Health at Stones Crossing, Franciscan CityWay complexes in downtown Indianapolis, the renovation of the Center for Women & Children, and completion of Franciscan Hospice House on the Indianapolis campus.

Jay Brehm, chief financial officer for Franciscan Health Central Indiana, will serve as interim president and CEO.

“Jim Callaghan has distinguished himself as a visionary, committed to improving the health care of residents in the Indianapolis area and surrounding counties,” said Kevin D. Leahy, president and CEO of Franciscan Alliance, in written remarks.”

Prior to his central Indiana appointment, Dr. Callaghan served as president of Franciscan Health Michigan City, where he held other leadership roles as chief operating officer, vice president of medical affairs and other key clinical and administrative appointments.

Callaghan received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He completed an internal medicine internship at Northwestern University School of Medicine. He also holds an MBA from Purdue University.
