Gannett plans to lay off 56 workers at a production facility in Indianapolis when its Gannett Publishing Services division stops operating two of its four printing presses.
The company said in a notice to the state that the layoffs will begin on or about March 13.
The cuts will affect about one-third of the workers at the printing plant at 8278 Georgetown Road. The facility prints Gannett newspapers including The Indianapolis Star, USA Today, the Courier-Journal in Louisville and several Gannett papers in Indiana—and is expected to continue doing so.
A spokeswoman for Gannett did not immediately return a message seeking a comment. But an IndyStar story published Wednesday quoted a Gannet spokesperson saying company is “adjusting our staffing in Indianapolis as we adapt to industry conditions.”
According to the company’s notice—filed in compliance with the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act—about half of the affected employees are inserters, a job that typically entails either putting advertisements or supplements into a printed newspaper or operating the machinery that does so. The layoffs will also affect press operators and mailroom staff.
The layoffs will not impact any Gannett newsroom employees.

The chickens have been coming home to roost ever since Gannett bought the Star and turned it into another east-coast, left-wing rag.
Certainly, print publications are suffering for a multitude of reasons, but it does no good to enter a market and tell one’s readers/subscribers what a bunch of backwater hicks they are and that they ought to “get with it” and embrace the leftist philosophies that people with an ounce of common sense know are destroying America.

Gannett chased off all the experienced writers who knew their beats because they cost too much.
Giving away the content for free and thinking they would make up the difference on internet advertising was a fatal mistake. I don’t understand why they still have printing presses, period, it is easier to read the content on an iPad and you don’t have to deal with recycling the paper.
If you’re tired of young people and they’re gosh darned new perspectives … just consider how ironic it is that many of the folks who grew up in the 60’s have grown up to be their parents.
And it shows, Joe B, that those folks who grew up in the 1960s (as I did) have grown up to be parents of people so clueless they inevitably vote for idiotic, socialist Democrats, time and again. (My children and their spouses, all in their early 40s, have thankfully not fallen for the Dem’s BS.)

I’m just amazed that folks who lived through Nixon don’t see the parallels to Trump.
I read the “east coast left-wing rags”. The Star has definite right lean when it comes to presenting head lines. I suspect it looks like it leans left that if you get the bulk of your news from FOX or Facebook. But from that point of view, I guess everything could look left.
And yeah… Gannet is just another corporate holding company stripping down operations and selling assets. They would have sold the whole printing operation if they hadn’t help kill the newspaper business and made it worthless to anybody else, AND could have figured out how to do the print cheaper somewhere else.
First and foremost, the demise of journalism is sad and shocking. Bob of course is correct the liberalism and wokeness is once again destroying a great American institution. Yes, Joe is correct the business model of printed papers makes as much sense as buggy whip production, but there is an underlying issue affecting news publishing that Gannett is pushing. If two years after Trump is out of office, you still report breathlessly on his being but nothing on the current administration many people will decide to go elsewhere for the news. The Indianapolis Star used to be a great organization. But its final death knoll is clanging loud.

Leaving aside the … historically unique aspects of the 2020 election and the fall out from that, Trump has sought the limelight and the media has reported on it.
I sure don’t recall George Bush the first (the most recent historical example of a one-term president) deciding that he was going to remain the center of the Republican Party after his loss.
