  1. Our lawmakers are so focused on “crisis management” for these issues – but nearly all of them were caused by their (or their predecessor’s) complete lack of foresight. Pension crisis? Education funding? Public Health? Crime? These issues are centuries old, and our lawmakers have no incentive to fix or improve them, because those are the issues they’re going to use to run their campaign next year and the next and forever.

    1. Well said, Charles. Regarding education funding, it boggles my mind how republicans constantly revert to their their bad-faith framing of education funding being “the largest line item in the budget,” as though that means it shouldn’t be increased.

    2. The GOP super majority in the Indiana state legislature fails to grasp the age-old maxim that “you get what you pay for” or, put another way, “you don’t get what you don’t pay for. It is the stingy mindset of legislators on these issues that has caused a deficit of quality in K-12 education and public health care in Indiana. As a result, they have put the state on par with Mississippi. Neither is a place anyone should brag about.

  2. The word Holcomb in the headline triggered IBJ’s Democrat flock. Somehow wanting high wage employers is bad! Crime? Yes, similar to all the other Democrat Mecca’s it’s out of control in Metro Indy. Education spending? You don’t even know what you are asking for, but it definitely has to flow to the left wing political machine known as public education. Money flowing to education outside that system Bad!

    1. I can only speak for me, Chuck … but I don’t think that Holcomb is the problem. I think the problem is our legislators have little to no interest in supporting what he’s suggesting.

To a fair chunk of them, he’s just a RINO. They are more interested in social legislation and rewarding their donors with bills like mandating coal usage and more tax cuts, all the while complaining there’s not enough money. They think we are all stupid and forgot that instead of using that billion dollars in the special session just a few months ago to do things like pay down pension debt or fund READI grants, they gave us all a piddling “tax refund” so they could brag about something in their campaigns for re-election.

Actually, given the number of re-elected incumbents, maybe we are that stupid.
