Indianapolis-based TeleServices Direct Inc. will keep its Lafayette call center open after notifying state officials in February that the center would close and put 279 employees out of work.

The telemarketer said the branch would shut down by April 4. But a week before the closing, the company had a change of heart, according to WLFI-TV Channel 18 in Lafayette.

IBJ could not reach company officials this morning to ask what led to their reconsidering the decision.

Steve Lair, TeleServices Direct’s chief administrative officer, told WLFI that the company had been exploring ways to reduce expenses.

About 80 people left after the company announced its decision to close the location, but 200 remain and will continue working.

The 279 positions TeleServices Direct had planned to cut included 247 sales representatives.

TeleServices Direct was founded in 1989 as a direct marketing company and began in-house telemarketing in 1993. Its headquarters are near 71st Street and Zionsville Road.
