Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination by starting a $3 million fund-raising drive to expand the city’s memorial to the civil rights leader.
Martin Luther King Jr. Park is the spot where Robert Kennedy delivered the news of King’s assassination to a large crowd in April 1968. A ceremony at the park is planned for Saturday.
Preliminary plans for the upgraded memorial include an interactive kiosk featuring historic speeches by both King and Kennedy.
Kennedy stopped in Indianapolis as he campaigned for president just weeks before he also was assassinated. A statue in the park memorializes both men.
Indiana State Rep. Bill Crawford (D-Indianapolis) is helping lead the effort and hopes fund-raising efforts will finish by July.
