Home products makers MasterBrand Cabinets Inc. plans to invest $8 million in its operations in the southwest Indiana city of Ferdinand, creating 262 jobs by the end of 2016.

The Jasper-based firm said Friday that it intended to buy $8 million in equipment for its existing 500,000-square-foot facility in Ferdinand, allowing it to expand its capacity and product offerings.

The firm expects to begin hiring cabinet assemblers, component pullers, shipping helpers, and supervision and quality personnel later this year.

MasterBrand already employs more than 1,500 workers in the city, and a total of 3,500 statewide at six facilities.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. has offered MasterBrand up to $1.25 million in conditional tax credits and up to $100,000 in training grants based on the company’s job creation plans. An announcement from IEDC did not specify wages for the new jobs, and a MasterBrand representative did not immediately respond to a request for information Friday morning.

Ferdinand officials also have approved a tax abatement for the firm, according to the IEDC.

In March 2013, the manufacturer announced plans to hire 76 workers in Goshen. As of March this year, the company had added close to 110 employees at that location, according to the IEDC.

Founded in 1954 in Celestine, MasterBrand is a subsidiary of Fortune Brands Home & Security. It makes standard and custom cabinet brands such as Aristokraft, Decorá, Omega, and Homecrest Cabinetry. They are sold directly to kitchen and bath dealers, home centers, wholesalers and large builders.
