Kelly Mitchell announced Friday she was leaving her job as an investment director in the state treasurer's office Aug. 1. Mitchell won a three-way race at the Republican Party Convention last month to replace her current boss, Treasurer Richard Mourdock.
Mitchell will face off against Democratic nominee Mike Boland in November's general election.
State employees are barred from conducting political work during normal work hours under the state's ghost employment laws.
