Beginning Wednesday, local customers who subscribe to Amazon’s Prime service can order items as late as noon and receive them by 9 p.m. the same day for a flat service charge of $5.99, the company said.
The Seattle-based retailer has identified more than a million items that are eligible for same-day delivery. They include popular movies, video games, last-minute travel needs, back-to-school supplies and family necessities.
Users who don’t subscribe to Prime can still receive items on the same day in some cases, but would pay a $9.98 fee for the first item and 99 cents for each following item.
Amazon Prime is an annual membership program that costs $99 per year. Benefits include free two-day shipping and unlimited streaming of movie and TV content via Prime Instant Video.
In addition to Indianapolis, Amazon rolled out the same-day service on Wednesday to the Baltimore, Dallas, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., metro areas. It already was available in Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco and Seattle.
The service is one of many efforts Amazon has been making to attract new customers and encourage existing customers to spend more, even though it increased its Prime two-day shipping membership program's annual fee to $99 from $79 in March.
In May, Indianapolis was one of 15 cities to be included in Amazon’s Sunday package delivery service.
Amazon operates order fulfillment centers in Indianapolis, Plainfield, Whitestown and Jeffersonville. It has 5,000 employees in Indiana.
