The first phase of a wind farm being developed in Indiana by Richmond-based Dominion Resources Inc. and BP Wind Energy is operational, the companies announced today

The companies said the 222 turbines at the Fowler Ridge Wind Farm in Benton County can generate 440 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 120,000 average homes.

Dominion Energy Marketing Inc. bought 200 megawatts and American Electric Power subsidiaries Indiana Michigan Power and Appalachian Power each purchased 100 megawatts from the Wind Farm operators under long-term contracts.

Dominion and BP Wind Energy said the wind farm could be expanded to 750 megawatts in the future.

Meanwhile, another energy company expects to have the first of hundreds of wind turbines in operation by this fall at a new wind farm in northwestern Indiana.

White County officials joined managers from Texas-based Horizon Wind Energy in a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday for the project near the town of Chalmers.

Horizon plans within five years to install more than 600 turbines with the potential to produce 1,000 megawatts of electricity. Project manager Martin Culik said he expects enough turbines for producing 200 megawatts to be finished by the end of October.
