Mike Hicks’ [Oct. 27] column, despite the label of “economic analysis,” contained no discernible economic analysis and displayed a total failure in understanding real risk. I would like Hicks to analyze the probability that 20 citizens in the United States will die from Ebola. I suspect more Indiana residents will die from influenza this winter than U.S. citizens will die from Ebola.

Secondly, he trivializes any attempt to encourage healthy eating or to curb the prevalence of sugary fountain drinks. Consumption of fountain drinks is not a “wholly private decision.” All of us will share the health care costs of the dramatic increases in the incidence of diabetes.

His perspective 50 years ago would have trivialized efforts to curb smoking.

I am interested in the Centers for Disease Control focusing on the real and potentially enormous threats to our nation’s health. I am also interested in real economic analysis—not an ideological rant.
