Republican Connie Lawson easily held off Democrat Beth White to win her first four-year term as secretary of state.

Tuesday's victory over White and Libertarian Karl Tatgenhorst marks Lawson's first election to the office that oversees elections and business registration for the state.

Lawson is a former state senator who was appointed to the job in 2012 to fill the remainder of former Secretary of State Charlie White's term. White was removed from office following his conviction on voter fraud charges stemming from his 2010 race.

With about 77 percent of the vote in Tuesday night, Lawson had captured 57 percent of the vote, compared with White's 39 percent.

Lawson worked to improve transparency in the office following White's conviction.

White is a two-term Marion County clerk who drew attention in June for proactively performing the state's first same-sex marriages.
