Allegiant Air announced Tuesday morning that it will begin offering seasonal nonstop flights from Indianapolis International Airport to New Orleans beginning in February.
The Las Vegas-based airline said the flights from Indianapolis to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport will be offered twice a week from Feb. 5 through May 5.
Allegiant also said it would offer seasonal, twice-weekly nonstops to New Orleans from Orlando, Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio.
New Orleans will be the fifth nonstop destination for Allegiant from Indianapolis. Last Wednesday, the airline announced it would begin flying in February from Indianapolis to Las Vegas and three Florida cities: St. Petersburg, Orlando and Punta Gorda.
The airline said the flights from Indianapolis to New Orleans would start as low as $85 one-way. Allegiant, however, is known in the travel industry for charging numerous add-on fees that can escalate base ticket prices dramatically.
The airline also keeps operating costs down by using third-party contractors to staff ticket counters and gates, and typically has no back-up planes at origination airports. Allegiant has one of the highest complaint rates in the industry, with about half of the problems having to do with flight delays and cancellations.
"We are very excited to announce New Orleans as our newest destination city and to offer Allegiant travelers the option of vacationing in New Orleans for less," said Jude Bricker, Allegiant Travel Company senior vice president of planning, in a written statement. "Over 75 percent of New Orleans visitors are here for vacation, making the city a perfect fit for Allegiant's brand of low-cost leisure travel."
