Nebraska-based Valmont Industries Inc. will close its steel operations unit in Elkhart on June 16, laying off about 70 employees.
The company makes steel and aluminum poles for street lights and traffic signals. Plant manager Franco Garcia said the company will consolidate its Elkhart operations into sites in Nebraska and Texas. Other operations will continue in Elkhart.
Meanwhile, Sanlo Inc. will gradually phase out operations at its steel manufacturing plant in Michigan City by early next year, eliminating about 70 jobs. Sanlo, a division of New York-based Cortland Cos., makes steel cables and assemblies, such as those used for garage doors.
