Contractors have finished bringing online dozens of acres of solar panels at Indianapolis' main airport, solidifying its status as the nation's largest airport-based solar farm.

Workers recently finished adding another 86 acres of solar panels at Indianapolis International Airport, more than doubling the solar farm's size to 151 acres.

The airport's solar farm now has 76,000 solar photovoltaic panels that generate 31.7 million kilowatt hours of electricity, or enough to power 3,200 average U.S. homes.

Airport spokeswoman Kendall Bybee says the solar farm at the airport on Indianapolis' southwest side became the nation's largest airport-based solar farm last year during a first phase that installed 75 acres of solar panels.

The nation's second-largest airport-based solar farm is at Denver International Airport, generating enough power to light about 2,600 homes.
