Dr. David S. Wilkes will succeed Dr. Ora Pescovitz as the Indiana University School of Medicine’s executive associate dean of research affairs, the school announced this morning.

Wilkes, a professor of biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology and immunology, is also the co-founder of ImmuneWorks Inc., a biotechnology company based in Indianapolis.

Wilkes’ research specialty is lung-transplant rejection. His projects have received continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health since 1994. Since 2004, Wilkes has directed the Center for Immunology at the IU medical school. Wilkes earned his medical degree at the Temple University School of Medicine.

“My new role as executive associate dean for research affairs is a logical extension of my diverse background and prior duties at the interdisciplinary Center of Immunobiology,” Wilkes said in a statement. “With the complexity of medical research and patient care today, success requires that the boundaries of research and clinical care be transparent.”

Pescovitz had led the medical school’s research for nine years and was also the CEO of Riley Hospital for Children. Earlier this year, she accepted a job as CEO of the University of Michigan Health System. Riley Hospital has yet to announce a successor.
