state budget before last night’s midnight deadline for adjourning, making a
special legislative session certain.
The Democrat-led House decided to put a Senate Republican budget proposal up
for a vote with only minutes left until midnight, even though they disliked it
because it cut $100 million from earlier proposed spending increases on schools
to pad the state’s budget surplus.
No House Republicans voted for the bill. They said it spent too much, among
other things.
About the same time, the Senate voted to pass the budget. But its failure in
the House meant Gov. Mitch Daniels would have to call lawmakers back for a
special session.
Both houses adjourned after the budget votes.
