The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission said Wednesday it had issued an order creating the new 463 area code that will overlay the existing 317 area code in the Indianapolis area. The 463 area code spells "IND" on a telephone keypad.
The commission says that without a new area code, the 317 area code would run out of numbers in the second quarter of 2017. The new area code overlay will take effect in the late spring of 2016. Customers with existing 317 phone numbers will keep them.
Once the area code overlay takes effect, all local calls will require 10-digit dialing with area codes. Local calling areas won't change.
