Carol Mihalik resigned as Indiana’s securities commissioner, the state announced late Friday afternoon.

Mihalik, who took the position in November 2013, turned in a letter of resignation Friday that said she was leaving immediately, according to the office of Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson.

“Carol did not give any reason for her departure,” Secretary of State’s Office Communications Director Valerie Kroeger said in an e-mail Tuesday. “She resigned on Friday and it was official that day.”

Lawson named her chief of staff, Brandon Clifton, as interim securities commissioner. Clifton has been deputy secretary of state since Dec. 1. He previously served as deputy general counsel at the Indiana Department of Administration.

Mihalik succeeded Chris Naylor, who resigned in October 2013 after six years in the position to become assistant executive director of the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council.

“I want to thank Carol for her service to the State of Indiana,” Lawson said in a written statement. “She was a fierce prosecutor who worked tirelessly to put those who defrauded Hoosiers behind bars and to protect investors’ hard earned dollars. She served each day with the public’s interest in mind.”

Mihalik joined the secretary of state's office in 2009 as associate general counsel primarily focused on complex securities litigation.

She previously worked under two commissioners at the Indiana Department of Insurance and in the office of the Indiana attorney general.
