The Democrat said in an email to supporters that he'll file paperwork Wednesday to begin his Senate campaign. Hill said in that message that he's running "because working people across Indiana need a fighter" who's on their side.
Hill announced last month that he would launch a 2016 Senate campaign in early June. He said in Wednesday's message that "for too long, working people across America have been counted out, and left out, of our economic progress."
The former five-term congressman is the first Democrat to enter the race.
On the Republican side, U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman and former Indiana Republican Party Chairman Eric Holcomb have announced Senate campaigns.
Some Republican leaders also are urging Rep. Todd Young to run for the open seat.
