Smith said he would remain in the job long enough to help the association find a suitable replacement.
The association represents eight of the 13 casinos in Indiana, including Hoosier Park Racing & Casino in Anderson and Indiana Grand Racing Casino in Shelbyville, which are owned by Indianapolis-based Centaur Gaming.
Smith, a former state legislator and businessman from Rensselaer, is treasurer of the Indiana Council of Problem Gambling.
“As a team, we have accomplished much and have seen the gaming industry in Indiana grow into a wonderful partner with our state and local communities,” Smith said in a written statement. “I am most proud of the thousands of jobs we’ve created and the over $12 billion we’ve provided to local and state tax revenues to improve the quality of life for Hoosiers.”
Indiana’s gambling industry successfully pushed for legislation this year to help it fight competition from neighboring states, but it didn’t get everything it wanted from lawmakers.
The Anderson and Shelbyville casinos had sought immediate approval to use live dealers for table games, but were only given permission to ask for the change in 2021.
