A southern Indiana county council has voted against joining a regional collaborative effort on development projects being pushed by Gov. Mike Pence.

The Clark County Council voted 7-0 this week against joining the Regional Cities authority proposed among Indiana counties and cities near Louisville. The program was signed into law this year.

During a nearly two-hour discussion, council members raised concerns about giving too much control to an appointed five-member board, the News and Tribune reported.

The program will award grants or loans to regional groups for projects that could help attract new businesses and residents.

The state budget includes $84 million over the next two years for the Regional Cities program. That money, though, will be raised by a tax-amnesty program.

The southern Indiana initiative's steering committee has discussed trying to ensure adequate water supply and establishing Wi-Fi services in rural areas.
