The Associated Press was founded in 1846 as a news-gathering cooperative. Member newspapers agreed to provide for no cost their stories to the AP in exchange for being able to publish at no cost the stories contributed by other newspapers. I’m not sure what the business model is now, but whatever it is may prove to be its undoing. If that occurs, “we the people” will suffer the most.
I don’t know if this is too funny or too sad. The IndyStar has so little original or local content now. Beyond the occasional newsertainment piece the Star produced the AP provided the only real news content the paper carried, albeit it was generally stories from out of state sources.
It does not appear this will affect the LOCAL portion of the printed/digital edition of the IndyStar too much. Only 3 stories credited to the AP appeared in today’s main section and Sports section combined. (There were 15 stories by local writers and 9 credited to USA Today.). HOWEVER, it appears we will no longer enjoy the News and Sports Extra editions. Every one of the 25 stories in these two sections were credited to the AP. Every one.
Interesting to read about how media businesses are navigating through this dynamic environment. I hope they can find the financial viability to continue their mission to inform citizens without succumbing to providing only content that feeds peoples’ confirmation bias. We’ll see who comes out the other side.
When Gannett announced that the Star’s still state of the art printing operation would be shut down in order to have the paper printed in Illinois, that was a big clue. They’re doing the same thing around the country. If you haven’t noticed, the Indy daily ceased being a legitimate newspaper’ years ago. A newspaper without a viable wire service is as useless as a dry docked cabin cruiser in the middle of the desert. As a former paper boy for the Times and later copy boy for the Star-News it’s sad to watch. This is a ‘typical’ outcome when independent businesses get ‘swooped up’ in corporate fire sales. It evolves to a lesser product to no product at all. Sad.
