Never understand why people would pay to watch these events 1/4 mile from the action.
The tone and content of this article miss the real stories of this event. First, this is an unprecedented spectacle that is yet another marquee event pulled together by the Indiana Sports Corp with USA Swimming. Swimming flies under the radar all the time except for the Olympics when it’s the biggest deal of all (along with Track & Field and Gymnastics). Indy is where the next legendary swimming team will be identified and launched (e.g., Katie Ledecky and co.). Second, there are major events downtown at the Convention Center and on Georgia Street that support a monumental event for attendees and local residents. This will have a great economic impact for central Indiana that should be highlighted. It’s the Indiana BUSINESS Journal, right? Third, the local business community has really stepped up to support the event. If Indiana is to raise its stature, community support is essential and major firms like OneAmerica, Lilly and many others are being great corporate citizens. Strong support enables the city to attract future major events. As a swimmer who grew up in Indiana, am I biased and proud of our hometown? Heck yes. But it does not mean that I cannot identify the real stories for this breakthrough event.
I agree. Remember the FINA world championships at the fieldhouse? Amazing experience, and Indy really buzzed over that weekend.
Plus, while swimming is great to watch in a small space like the Nat, it’s also a good sport to watch in a larger venue because it’s not congested (like football). It’s very easy to see the lanes and positions even if you can’t see faces.
This is a great event. Looking forward to being there!
Tim Hinchey needs to be fired.
