Indiana Justice Brent Dickson announced Monday that he will retire from the Supreme Court in the spring as the longest-serving justice in the court's history.

Dickson, who will reach the mandatory retirement age of 75 in July, was appointed to the Supreme Court by former Gov. Bob Orr in January 1986 and served as chief justice from May 15, 2012, to Aug. 18, 2014.

He was succeeded by Loretta Rush, Indiana's first female chief justice.

No official date for Dickson’s retirement has been set as of yet. Applications to fill his position on the high court will go online Thursday.

“Throughout Justice Brent Dickson's historic tenure on the Indiana Supreme Court, his intellect and opinions have shaped Indiana law and judicial practice for the benefit of all Hoosiers," Gov. Mike Pence said Monday in a written statement. "His tenure, including as chief justice of Indiana, has been characterized by integrity and a deep devotion to the judiciary in this state, and he will be missed."
