History: Old Hickory’s origins date to the late 19th century, when Billy Richardson began selling hickory chairs and rockers on Saturdays in Martinsville’s town square. Old Hickory Furniture Co. was founded in 1892 and incorporated in 1899. The Richardson family owned Old Hickory until the 1960s, when it was purchased by hotel chain Ramada, which owned the company for about a decade before it was sold and moved to Shelbyville in the late 1970s. In 2022, Anderson-based Hickory Furniture Collective acquired Old Hickory. Led by CEO Chad Galloway, Hickory Furniture Collective has three other brands: Hickory Furniture Designs, Flat Rock Furniture and Rocky Top Furniture.

Industry hub: Galloway noted that Shelbyville was once the “furniture capital of the world” when more than 15 furniture makers operated in the city. “There was more furniture made in Shelbyville, Indiana, than anywhere in North America, actually,” he said. Old Hickory’s facility at 403 S. Noble St. was once used by Shelbyville Desk Co.

Wood source: Old Hickory uses wood from hickory saplings that are about 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 inches in diameter and cut from wooded areas of southern Tennessee and northern Mississippi.

Product details: The company sells a variety of rustic hickory chairs, tables, beds, cabinets, accessories, porch furniture and lighting. The company also specializes in upholstery work. Galloway said Old Hickory’s “most iconic pieces” are its high-back rocking chair and hoop chair.

How to buy: Old Hickory sells furniture through about 90 retail dealers around the country.

Fun fact: Old Hickory furniture can be found at Camp David, Rainforest Cafe at Walt Disney World, U.S. National Park lodges and Indiana State Parks lodges. The furniture most famously has been used at Old Faithful Inn at Yellowstone National Park for more than a century. The company’s furniture can also be seen on Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone” series with Kevin Costner.
