Five Marion County school districts have been awarded a total of $7.5 million from the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation to help students navigate their way through the college-enrollment process.

The foundation said Wednesday the grants are part of a $14 million initiative to reverse declining college enrollment. The funds are designed to help students make their way through the process of exploring, enrolling in and financing college.

The foundation is giving $1.5 million each to Indianapolis Public Schools, Franklin Township Community Schools, Wayne Township MSD and Victory College Prep, and $1.47 million to Warren Township MSD.

These school corporations also each received $20,000 grants earlier this year to create four-year plans to increase college enrollment. They were invited to submit proposals for funding to implement those plans.

With the funding awarded Wednesday, the school corporations will begin implementing their plans during this school year and will continue their efforts through the 2027–2028 school year, Fairbanks said. Additionally, the school corporations will use a portion of the funding to develop long-term sustainability plans.

“Without access to the proper resources and support, applying for college and obtaining financial aid can seem daunting and even unattainable for students,” said Claire Fiddian-Green, Fairbanks Foundation president & CEO. “Our goal for College Matters is to remove barriers so more students can apply to and enroll in college, ultimately empowering them to achieve their academic and career aspirations.”

    1. Completely agree David. Absurd to say they need this level of funding when the public school offices have personnel who’s sole job is to do this process…

    2. They publish enrollment numbers and you know how to do long division if you want to prove your point, no?

I’d call it more of a boondoggle that we have laws that give $11 million in taxpayer funds A YEAR to Heritage Christian and Roncalli … than I am a private foundation choosing to give $7.5 million to four school districts and one charter school to use over four years.

And by the way, Indiana has a ratio of 694 students to every one counselor. But you knew that, right?

    3. It seems like it works out to a few hundred bucks per student. Everything surrounding university admissions, decisions, & funding is overly complicated. It is probably a GDP sink, but the fault isn’t in the hands of K-12 schools.
