Greg Small

The leader of the Indiana Gaming Commission, the state’s gambling regulatory agency, is stepping down, Gov. Eric Holcomb announced Wednesday.

Executive Director Greg Small’s last day in the position will be Sept. 20, three years after he filled the role. He previously served as the commission’s general council for more than six years.

Gov. Eric Holcomb appointed agency General Counsel Dennis Mullen to serve as interim director while keeping his current role. Mullen has been with the agency since 2015.

“Greg’s knowledge and expertise has been invaluable in leading the Indiana Gaming Commission effectively and efficiently,” Holcomb said in a written statement. “The agency will be left in good hands with Dennis at the helm.”

The General Assembly has been dealing with the fallout surrounding a former lawmaker’s conviction for involvement in a casino fraud case. That prompted legislative leaders to put a pause on all gambling-related bills last session, although lawmakers still shuffled where the agency’s fine collections go after Republican lawmakers raised concerns over high casino fines.

The gaming commission is responsible for casino and other gambling licenses as well as investigating and punishing illegal gambling.
