Former Indiana State Health Commissioner Judith A. Monroe has been named president and CEO of the Atlanta-based CDC Foundation, the organization announced Monday.

Monroe will take the job Feb. 1, succeeding founding CEO Charles Stokes, who is retiring.

The CDC Foundation advances the mission of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through philanthropy and public-private partnerships. Established by Congress more than 20 years ago, the CDC Foundation has launched 800 programs and raised more than $620 million for the CDC. It manages nearly 300 CDC-led programs in the United States and in 75 countries.

Monroe served as Indiana’s health commissioner from 2005 to 2010. She joined the CDC in 2010 as a deputy director and now leads the federal agency’s Office for State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support.

Monroe was an Indianapolis family physician in the St. Vincent Health network when she was appointed state health commissioner by Gov. Mitch Daniels in March 2005.
