Democrats who control the
Indiana House are prepared to consider changes to their proposed one-year state
budget proposal.

The House Ways
and Means Committee planned to consider amendments to the bill today, and then
possibly vote to send the measure to the full House for consideration.

The one-year plan would increase spending on schools by a statewide average of
2 percent, and ensure that every district gets as much or more money next year
than they got this year.

Republicans, who favor the traditional two-year budget, say the plan spends far
too much in one year. They also say the spending levels could not be sustained
in a second year without a huge jump in state revenues or a tax increase.
