So a Republican Representative from Noblesville who is in the consulting business and retained by Cumberland is supporting a bill to remove Cumberland from Indianapolis’ UNIGOV so Cumberland can have more development? Sounds like a clear conflict of interest, even in a state where the legislators are part time and have full time jobs. She’s voting to increase her consulting work and thus her income…
And how strange is it to read of Republicans advocating for moving government closer to home, and more local control. Because they certainly don’t recognize that concept when it comes to Indianapolis and Marion County…for that, the Legislature full of folks from everywhere else in the state knows better.
So let me clarify a few important points about this situation. Representative Shonkwiler actually worked for the town of Cumberland as a consultant in her previous job but no longer works for the town or for that company. Her background includes working in the public sector and later representing the public sector as a consultant, which gives her valuable insight into community needs, but she has no financial benefit from this legislation as she no longer serves in that consulting role or any other roles in connection with the Town of Cumberland.
It’s also important to note that there isn’t any ill will toward the city of Indianapolis or UNIGOV. The reality is that UNIGOV didn’t anticipate a situation like Cumberland’s – a town that spans two counties, is providing all services in one county, and is experiencing rapid growth. This is really about providing more straightforward, equitable, less complicated government for residents. We’ve worked collaboratively with the city to protect their interests, and they understand that Cumberland’s situation is unique compared to other UNIGOV entities. We would support them in that understanding if it were to be applied elsewhere.
Let them. Also sever all other services whether it be related to infrastructure or emergency services.
Given that Cumberland has a Dept of Public Works there would likely be minimal change to coverage for infrastructure and public services. They have a police department, but fire service from IFD. Southport is the same. Also Indy DPW would likely maintain responsibility for Washington St and 10th St as county roads. I live in Speedway; DPW maintains Crawfordsville Rd/16th St, Lyndhurst, 10th, & High School Rd with Speedway limits. What Unigov created may have made sense 50+ years ago, but hamstrung how growth of the present day included cities could have naturally happened, especially Cumberland & Clermont.
This should be good for Cumberland. Indianapolis has done a poor job with zoning and land use, primarily because they don’t really care way out there, and they could approve the types of apartments and housing that attracts mostly democrat voters, may sound biased but true. The crime records seem to also reflect what has occurred north and east of Cumberland in Indianpolis as this newer housing types and been developed.
And for the record, INDOT maintains Washington St-US 40 from I465, thru Cumberland to and beyond Greenfield and Richmond. Cumberland has also built and maintained the sanitary and storm sewer systems as well as their own police and parks departments. Fire protection remains with IFD.
My point is, not much will change except the tax distribution and the control of development.
