The fair this year is celebrating the “Year of Tomatoes” with events each day featuring the Indiana fruit. Highlights will include the largest tomato contest – open to fruits weighing five pounds or larger – and a salsa recipe contest. Both events are open to the public.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Indiana ranks second in the country behind California in production of tomatoes for processing, with nearly 300,000 tons in 2007. The total value of Indiana tomato production for both fresh and processed tomatoes is $48 million.
The presence of tomato-products behemoth Red Gold Inc. in Madison County has much to do with that ranking.
The fair will run Aug. 7 through Aug. 23.
