Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight will travel to Italy next month for meetings with executives of Fiat Group, which now controls Chrysler and its four factories in his city.

A city spokesman said Goodnight expects two days of meetings with Fiat executives and hopes to meet with other businesses during the trip July 12-18.

Chrysler had more than 4,600 workers in Kokomo before its bankruptcy filing, with many of those people expected back at work next week as its plants reopen.

City spokesman David Galvin said the mayor wants to establish a relationship with Fiat’s leaders in hopes of not only retaining the city’s current jobs, but perhaps adding more.

The city will pay about $4,000 for Goodnight and Galvin to make the trip along with state and business officials.
