The White House announced yesterday that Fernandez has been picked to become assistant secretary of commerce for economic development and Economic Development Administration administrator.
Fernandez was Bloomington’s mayor from 1996 to 2003 and was the Democratic nominee for Indiana secretary of state in 2002, losing that race to Republican Todd Rokita.
Since leaving office, Fernandez has worked for the Indianapolis law firm Krieg DeVault LLP and has been a partner and senior vice president of Bloomington-based First Capital Group.
His nomination requires U.S. Senate confirmation.
