Your June 15 article “Hub drags on airport” did an excellent job discussing the struggles facing the FedEx hub at Indianapolis International Airport. Like many businesses and local commerce, the FedEx Express hub is trying to thrive during a decline in shipping and an increase in fuel prices.

On top of all these challenges the company already faces, UPS is leading an effort to use the regulatory arm of government to reclassify FedEx Express employees and fundamentally change the way FedEx Express operates its business.

I find this very disappointing. The strength of FedEx Express lies in its ability to quickly and efficiently ship overnight packages through air transportation. Changing worker regulations has the potential to hinder this business model and cripple the company. This could devastate business at the Indianapolis hub and prove to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Our FedEx Express hub will recover, but Indiana cannot afford for our federal government to intervene in the private sector at the cost of hundreds of jobs in the heart of Indiana. I hope our members of Congress and community leaders will stand up and oppose efforts by UPS to interfere in the operations of FedEx Express.
