BennerBenner began covering sports for the Indianapolis Star at age 19 in 1968, joined the paper full time in 1974, and for many years penned a daily sports column.
He left the daily newspaper in 2001 and subsequently worked for Indiana Sports Corp., the Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association (forerunner to Visit Indy) and the Horizon League, where he became senior associate commissioner.
Benner kept his hand in sports writing as a weekly columnist for IBJ until late 2013, when he joined Pacers Sports & Entertainment as a senior vice president.
“To be honored by my peers with this induction is truly the capstone of my sports journalism career. Through 33 years at the Star and 12 with the Indianapolis Business Journal, I was blessed to chronicle most of the greatest moments in our city’s and state’s sports history and tell the stories of both the high and the humble. It has been an amazing joyride,” said Benner, an Indiana University graduate and lifelong Hoosier.
Benner will be inducted at an awards banquet April 9 at Valle Vista Golf Club in Greenwood.
