Subscribe NowInternational traffic makes up a small percentage of both passenger and freight traffic at Indianapolis International Airport, but these categories also showed much stronger growth than domestic traffic did last year.
Including all types of passenger flights—domestic scheduled, charter, and international—4.2 million passengers boarded planes in Indianapolis in 2016. That represents 5.8 percent growth over 2015. In comparison, the number of passengers leaving Indianapolis for international destinations last year grew 69.2 percent, to 37,000.
Passengers count as international if they fly directly from Indianapolis to one of the airport’s three international destinations—Toronto, plus seasonal flights to either Cancun, Mexico; or Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Indianapolis counts passengers as domestic if they fly from Indianapolis to another domestic airport to make international connections.
Including both domestic and international shipments, cargo volume fell 1.8 percent last year, to 1.1 million tons of inbound and outbound mail and freight. But international freight volume climbed 118.4 percent, including 35,500 tons of inbound freight and 44,700 tons of outbound freight.•
