Subscribe NowTom Gallagher’s Urban Design article on the GM was very informative on the options on the table for developing the site. Of particular interest was his concluding statement regarding the site’s proximity to the White River.
It never ceases to amaze me how Indianapolis has almost totally ignored this potentially beautiful waterway (White River State Park being an exception). The zoo was built on its banks yet no view or use of the river was incorporated into its design. Ditto for the IUPUI campus and IU hospitals.
Whereas most European and other American cities do embrace their waterways into their infrastructure and design, Indianapolis has so far missed the boat in doing so. Hopefully the winning developers will reverse that trend.
