Hogsett has updated the late Mayor Bill Hudnut’s 1970s anti-littering public service announcement, dubbed “the Hudnut Hook,” in which he challenged people to “put litter in its place."
The mayor’s office on Wednesday launched a new PSA to announce its “It’s My City” initiative, which the city says aims to “spark a recommitment to civic engagement in Indianapolis, challenging residents to participate in creating a cleaner, greener and more beautiful city for all.”
In the 30-second spot, which is slated to air during some local TV news shows on Wednesday, Hogsett is seen trying to perfect the so-called “Hudnut Hook” by throwing litter into a waste basket.
“Come on Joe, you can do this,” Hogsett says while watching a video in his office of Hudnut doing the signature move.
“This is our city,” Hogsett said in the spot. “Together we can do a little and change a lot. Let’s make Indianapolis a cleaner, greener city."
The three-year effort is being led by the city along with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and Eli Lilly and Co. This year will focus on neighborhood cleanups and anti-littering, and 2018 will be focused on creating new green areas around town. The city will shift its focus to “place-making and creative investment through art and nature” in 2019.
