Carmel Fire Department spokesman Tim Griffin said crews didn't immediately detect anything hazardous in the building at 10401 N. Meridian St. after the odor was reported about 11 a.m. Thursday.
Griffin said at least a dozen people were suffering from flu-like symptoms such as headaches and nausea when they were taken to hospitals, but all were alert. Three others were treated at the scene.
He said about 40 people were in a conference room when they first noticed the odor. The department's hazardous material team was working to determine the source of the smell.
